To become a CFAA Student:
Click here to register as a NEW Student by enrolling in a correspondence course to become a CFAA Fire Alarm Technician
Once you enroll on your first course, you automatically become a CFAA Student. You will then be able to apply for exemption on one or more of the other courses.
 
Courses 1 and 5 are mandatory and Course 1 is to be taken first..
A student may be granted an exemption by the CFAA in one or more of courses 2, 3 and 4.
Exemptions are based solely upon courses that have been previously completed at a College, University or Trade School level.
The CFAA requires a minimum grade of 60% in order for exemptions to be considered.
Work experience and High School courses are not grounds for an exemption. There are no exceptions to this policy.

Acceptable documentation for an exemption. Any one or more of the following:
·         a photocopy of the official college transcript
·         course outlines
·         diploma, and/or
·         the wallet electrician’s license
·         Each student will be assessed on an individual basis.

The one-time fee for processing your first exemption request is $50.00 (plus applicable provincial tax) (non-refundable)
There is no additional charge for subsequent exemption requests for other courses.
 

To apply for an exemption:

To become a CFAA Registered Fire Alarm Technician, you must first successfully complete the five courses that make up the CFAA Fire Alarm Technology Program. 

However, you may be exempt from one or more of the five courses if you have taken SIMILAR courses through a recognized college or university other than directly from the CFAA.

PROCEDURES FOR SUBMITTING EXEMPTION APPLICATIONS:
               (select one of the following)

1. - If you are a current CFAA student
2. - If you are an Electrician
3 - If you have completed all the required courses 
4 - If you took courses elsewhere than the CFAA 
5 - If you are a ‘non-current’ CFAA student (inactive since Jan 2012)
6 - If you have not yet taken any required courses


 
AnchorRULES FOR EXEMPTION APPLICATIONS 
There are no exceptions to the following rules:

  • 1. - Submit your Exemption Application either on-line through your CFAA website based student account or use the printable Exemption Application From.  Choose the applicable procedure from the list below. 
  • 2. - Submit a photocopy of an official college/university transcript, diploma, course outlines, and/or a valid electrician’s license.

a.       The transcript must show a minimum achieved grade of 60% plus a minimum of 36 hours. There is no exception to this rule.
b.      An on-line ‘student view’ printed page may not be accepted.  It must be a photocopy of an official school transcript.

c.       Work experience and high-school courses are not grounds for exemptions. 

d.       If your transcripts are from outside of Canada and/or in a foreign language, you must send a copy of the original with an officially translated version in English plus the affidavit & stamp from the Translator.  Some out of country transcripts may require assessment by an assessment services body such as the University of Toronto or W.E.S.

  • 3. - There is a fee of $50.00 plus applicable provincial tax to have your transcripts and course outlines assessed. This is a one time fee and covers all exemption requests.  This payment must accompany your Exemption Application.  No exemption applications will be processed without payment.
  • 4. - Each student will be assessed on an individual basis.

 


 
AnchorPROCEDURES FOR SUBMITTING EXEMPTION APPLICATIONS
NOTE: How you submit a request for an exemption depends on your current situation. Below are descriptions of various situations and the corresponding procedure to follow when applying for an exemption.
FIND AND FOLLOW THE OPTION BELOW THAT BEST DESCRIBES YOUR SITUATION

Option 1 -  If you are a current CFAA student - YOU ARE CURRENTLY ENROLLED IN OR HAVE PREVIOUSLY COMPLETED ONE OR MORE CFAA SUPPLIED COURSES AND YOU CURRENTLY HAVE A STUDENT ACCOUNT ON THIS WEBSITE WITH A DESIGNATED FOUR DIGIT STUDENT NUMBER.
a.      Simply log in with your email address and password. Then in your 'My Account' menu at the left side of the webpage, select 'Required Courses and Exemptions'.
 

Option 2 - If you are an Electrician - YOU ARE AN ELECTRICIAN OR YOU HAVE TAKEN COURSES THAT ARE REQUIRED TO BECOME AN ELECTRICIAN AND YOU DO NOT HAVE A STUDENT ACCOUNT ON THIS CFAA WEBSITE.
a.      Click this link to access the exemption request form.
b.      Print and complete the form as directed.
c.      Attach the required documentation.
d.      Submit your exemption request to the CFAA with your payment.


Option 3 -  If you have completed ALL the required courses - YOU HAVE COMPLETED ALL OF THE REQUIRED COURSES AT ONE OF THE THREE FOLLOWING TRAINING INSTITUTIONS:
                                          Seneca College, George Brown College or the Health & Safety Management Group

c.      Attach the required documentation.
d.      Submit your exemption request to the CFAA - NOTE - THE $50 EXEMPTION PAYMENT IS NOT REQUIRED FOR GRADUATES OF THE ABOVE THREE INSTITUTIONS.
 

Option 4 - If you took courses elsewhere than the CFAA - YOU ARE CURRENTLY ENROLLED IN, OR HAVE PREVIOUSLY COMPLETED ONE OR MORE COURSES AT TRAINING FACILITIES OTHER THAN THE CFAA AND YOU DO NOT HAVE A STUDENT ACCOUNT ON THIS CFAA WEBSITE.

c.      Attach the required documentation.
d.      Submit your exemption request to the CFAA with your payment.


Option 5 -  If you are a ‘non-current’ CFAA student (inactive since Jan 2012) - YOU HAVE PREVIOUSLY (PRIOR TO JAN 2012) COMPLETED ONE OR MORE CFAA SUPPLIED COURSES BUT YOU DO NOT HAVE A STUDENT ACCOUNT ON THIS CFAA WEBSITE.
a.       Please phone the CFAA to re-establish your ONLINE status as a CFAA student.  The telephone number is GTA local 905-944-0030 ext 101 or toll free 1-800-529-0552 ext 101.
 

Option 6 –  If you have not yet taken any required courses - YOU HAVE NOT TAKEN AND ARE NOT ENROLLED IN ANY OF THE REQUIRED OR SIMILAR COURSES.
a.       You must first become a student.

Once you are enrolled as a student you will be able to apply for an exemption on one or more of the other courses as explained in the above situations.
